31 Days of Horror: Day 6- Talking Horror and Kids on the Monster She Wrote Podcast and GIVEAWAY #21

One of my essential Horror Print Resources is Monster, She Wrote: The Women Who Pioneered Horror and Speculative Fiction by Lisa Kröger and Melanie R. Anderson. This book won the 2019 Bram Stoker Award for best Nonfiction and received a STAR review in Booklist. From that review

"Each author is placed into a section that best fits her most innovative work, and each entry is an informative treatise on what she wrote, her lasting influence, and how she touches the horror we know and love today. A chapter on current writers looks to the future... ...Straddling the divide between highly useful reference and compulsively readable stories about the writing lives of the women of horror, this book will keep you up all night (one way or another)."

In conjunction with the book, Kröger and Anderson launched an eponymous podcast where they continue the conversation of women in horror, both past and present.

Today, the latest episode of the Monster, She Wrote podcast dropped and it features me in conversation with Kröger and Anderson about middle grade and YA  horror, and its particular appeal to young women.

Click here to listen to our episode and also consider subscribing. Their regular episodes are deep dives into horror stories by women from The Yellow Wallpaper to Mexican Gothic and more! I was a regular listener and fan before Kröger and Anderson invited me join them.

But this is not simply a promotional post to get you to listen to me. This is a three day event on the blog with a double giveaway.

First, look for Kröger and Anderson themselves to this year's first "Why I Love Horror" example tomorrow and Thursday.

Second, this week's giveaway announcement is tied to Kröger and Anderson's award winning work. As a reminder, here are the basic rules followed by this week's giveaway--which will have 2 winners!

  1. You need to be affiliated with an American public library. My rationale behind that is that I will be encouraging you to read these books and share them with patrons. While many of them are advanced reader copies that you cannot add to your collections, if you get the chance to read them, my hope is that you will consider ordering a copy for your library and give away the ARC away as a prize or pass it on to a fellow staff member.
  2. If you are interested in being included in any giveaway at any time, you must email me at zombiegrl75 [at] gmail [dot] com with the subject line "#HorrorForLibraries." In the body of the email all you have to say is that you want to be entered and the name of your library.
  3. Each entry will be considered for EVERY giveaway. I will randomly draw a winner on Fridays sometime after 5pm central. But only entries received by 5pm each week will be considered for that  week.
  4. If you win, you are ineligible to win again for 4 weeks; you will have to re-enter after that time to be considered [I have a list of who has won, when, and what title]. However, if you do not win, you carry over into the next week. There is NO NEED to reenter.

But back to this week. In honor of the new series of Monster She Wrote titles, re-releases of forgotten horror works by women with introductions by Kroger and Anderson, Valancourt Books is offering a finished, paperback copy of the first title in the series, The Nightmare Flower by Elizabeth Engstrom, to two separate library worker winners.

From the Valancourt Book site:

Nightmare Flower (1992)
Monster, She Wrote #1
Elizabeth Engstrom
Introduction by
 Lisa Kröger

Book Description

This collection of eighteen short tales, a novelette and a short novel takes the reader inside the dark imagination of Elizabeth Engstrom, author of acclaimed horror classics like When Darkness Loves Us.

In these stories, you will read about a woman asked to be complicit in her own mother’s death, a grandmother with a macabre hobby, a bizarre, phallic-shaped flower that portends evil for a married couple, a father whose son is caught up in a sinister government experiment. These are weird and unsettling tales that will linger with the reader.

In her introduction to this new edition, Lisa Kröger writes, “There are true horrors that await readers in all of Engstrom’s works ... reminds me of another giant of horror literature, Shirley Jackson.”

Enter today for two chances to win this book and stay tuned to 31 Days of Horror to see more from Kröger and Anderson about why they love horror.

Finally, check out Valancourt Books who are generously sponsoring this giveaway, especially their Monster She Wrote and Paperbacks from Hell series of high quality paperbacks. The bundled pricing is a fantastic deal and the titles are high interest, forgotten modern classics, with brand new introductions by award winning writers. And most importantly, readers LOVE these books.
