#HorrorForLibraries Giveaway #47: When the Reckoning Comes

It's #HorrorForLibraries Giveaway day, and today I am giving away a very promising debut; one that I reviewed in the June issue of Library Journal. And it is super easy to booktalk!

More details on this week's giveaway below but first...

Here is a refresher on the basic rules to enter:

  1. You need to be affiliated with an American public library. My rationale behind that is that I will be encouraging you to read these books and share them with patrons. While many of them are advanced reader copies that you cannot add to your collections, if you get the chance to read them, my hope is that you will consider ordering a copy for your library and give away the ARC away as a prize or pass it on to a fellow staff member.
  2. If you are interested in being included in any giveaway at any time, you must email me at zombiegrl75 [at] gmail [dot] com with the subject line "#HorrorForLibraries." In the body of the email all you have to say is that you want to be entered and the name of your library.
  3. Each entry will be considered for EVERY giveaway. I will randomly draw a winner on Fridays sometime after 5pm central. But only entries received by 5pm each week will be considered for that  week. I use Random.org and have a member of my family witness the "draw"based off your number in the Google Sheet.
  4. If you win, you are ineligible to win again for 4 weeks; you will have to re-enter after that time to be considered [I have a list of who has won, when, and what title]. However, if you do not win, you carry over into the next week. There is NO NEED to reenter.

Now on to this week's giveaway and it is awesome! When the Reckoning Comes by LaTanya McQueen, a debut that is easy to book talk and so much fun to read. Here is my "Verdict" from my Library Journal review which can serve as a great teaser soundbite:
Verdict: Using the disturbing trend of celebrating happy moments on restored plantations, McQueen ratchets the discomfort up a notch, creating a story where readers actively cheer the angry spirits on. Hand to readers who like horror where systemic oppression and monsters collide such as in The Bright Lands by Fram and The Good House by Due.

Click here to read my full review, three words and notes, but whatever you do, book talk this book to readers. It is a wonderful horror title for anyone attending a wedding. It is also a great entry point for people to understand systemic racism. The fact that we have weddings at these places of real life horror will be eye opening for many. The over the top story of the ghosts of the slaves coming to the wedding to kill the white guests, is not that over the top when you really think about. Seems kinda appropriate actually.

Overall it is an excellent debut horror novel. I list The Bright Lands by Fram as a readalike on purpose because that was last year's surprise debut for me. An author I hadn't heard of, who pulled off an excellent debut. McQueen is the 2021 version.

I am jealous of everyone who will get to read this for the first time.

The winner will also receive a surprise bonus title from Silver Shamrock Publishing.

Thank you to Harper, and library market rep Lainey Mays specifically, for the review copy of When the Reckoning Comes. It comes out in August. Order it now!

Good luck!
